As we discussed in class today, it is not possible to approach difficult parts of history without bias. With that in mind, the next two questions of the week will address various views of colonialism and imperialism: PART 1: Watch this 5 minute video about the history of British colonialism: https://youtu.be/CHrHgnRswhM React to it:

When the mother countries conquer the small nations. That part is very destructive. I think the part that was right was when they said it was the reason for the first world war because they caused a bunch of problems and conquering all those nations the people will get mad. the first world war was definetley the biggest and they included that so i don't think they missed much.

Colonialization can, and is often very damaging to the place being colonized. Often natives get shoved down pushed around enslaved and their culture is lost. It's really a tragic thing sometimes. Colonialization can be good for the colonizer but not often for the colonized. I feel like that video did not go over that well enough.

An aspect of colonialism that has been destructive is that the colonies do not really get anything but negatives such as only being able to trade with their mother country. This video definitely got right the way. that they built their colonies into many times just industrial towns. An important connection between colonialism, conquest, and religion is that the mother countries saw making colonies as a way to gain all three at once. They got colonies, they got land from these colonies, and their people would spread their religion.

In history, the conquering of smaller nations by a mother country has proven to be destructive more often than not. For instance, the European conquest of the Americas resulted in the death of thousands of Native Americans, either from violence or disease. Also, one of the main causes for colonization is the desire to spread a religion or ideology. A good example of this is the Muslim conquest of large parts of Europe. Thus, colonization was both destructive and useful to the spread of religion.

An aspect of colonialism that has been destructive is the extensive exploitation of less developed nations, causing a significant drain of wealth. It is thought that this may have contributed to the outbreak of the First World War. In my opinion, the video said at least some of the information in a non-bias way.

the part that is most destructive is the economic imbalance caused by employing cheap labor and selling their recourses back to them at high prices. Comments are closed.
