Continuing from last week (when we discussed the fact that it is not possible to approach difficult parts of history without bias), this week’s Question of the Week will address a differing view of colonialism and imperialism from last week’s video:
PART 2: Read the article handed out in class today by Dinesh D’Souza, an American immigrant from India. React to it. What aspects of colonialism does he bring to light? What do you think this article gets right? Are there any important aspects of colonization that the article misses? Why does D’Souza say he can give two cheers, but not three? (Reminder: There is no need to answer every single question posed here, just choose a topic related to the article that you find interesting and comment on it.)

This article decides to pose the positive side of colonialism. I definitely think there is a good side to it, however the bad also needs to be known about and addressed. The idea of paying reparations to the descendants of people for how their ancestors were treated, I would agree with the author is stupid. There would be no way to pay every oppressed civilization in history. However, people should know their history and know how their own ancestors hurt others. This article does show a very good distinction on how the world eventually reaped the benefits of colonialism but how colonialism definitely could've been done in a more conservative way.

This article like Nathaniel said has the good things about colonialism. It trys not to show it to be very bad. It is mostly bad but there is some good things. I personally do not support colonialism and think that it should be adressed more and looked at more deeply. The author does give a good description of it and does say the big parts about it.

The document approaches colonialism with what seems like bias. However, the author's ethnicity provides a counter to this argument, since he was an immigrant and saw firsthand the effects of Westernization in Non-Western countries. The author describes colonization as a vital exchange of culture and trade. He also uses historical evidence to point out that Westernization brought new crops to different parts of the world. This provides a different view of colonialism than the typical racist view of it.

He (like Nathaniel said) argues for colonialism. He says that colonialism has good and bad. There are people who do good with it and there are people who do bad with it. The sword is only as bad as the wielder, it can protect and it can slaughter. I think what he meant in the segment about repaying I think he didn't really believe that I think he was just pointing out how ridiculous it was. It definitely is, you shouldn't punish someone for their grandparents mistakes.

I liked how Dinesh D’Souza, was so descriptive. A few aspects of colonialism that he mentioned, first how it has gotten a bad name in recent decades. He also talks about a misconception that the West could not have reached its current state of wealth, and influence by stealing from other cultures. But I love how he counterattacks this argument by saying that the West (or in this case the British) brought the rubber to Malaya, while some people think that the West took the rubber trees from Malaya. In conclusion, the article was good at dispelling later thoughts, but now after reading it, I have a clear understanding of what colonialism is.

I feel like when people move around a lot they caused mage to a lot of different wars to be fought and a lot of other people are moving because of colonization that borders are putt up. Comments are closed.
