Watch this two minute video: https://youtu.be/_IbNj7zGP7I Pearl S. Buck was said to be a “builder of bridges between China and the rest of the world.” What new information from the video did you learn about this novel's influence? What struck you about the culture in pre-Revolutionary China as presented by Buck in this novel? (Consider aspects of the culture such as religion, traditions, family life, and the relationship between rich and poor, men and women, and children and adults.)

It was widely spread and quickly. She won the nobel prize and only wrote the book in 3 months, making her very respected. What struck me personally was how much respect the poor had for the rich. They always coward in front of anyone who was more powerful and/or more respected.

The Good Earth became incredibly famous. Like Peter said, I was impressed in how she only wrote such a profound book in only 3 months. She was also different than a lot of other famous authors, like J.K. Rowling, who is famous due only to her Harry Potter series. Pearl Buck, however, is famous for a LOT of books. What struck me a lot was the extreme brutality of the soldiers, even to their own countrymen.

From the video I more learned more about how now the Chinese as well see this book as a great resource and bridge builder. Like Peter said I was struck by how the poor had such respect for the rich and thought of the rich as just so much better than themselves. What also surprised me personally though was how much filial piety has affect over the culture, no matter what is happening or what they are doing you still have to respect and show reverence to your elders.

I learned that this book was written in 3 months which is a very short time. She also won a nobel prize which is amazing. And i found out she has also made a lot of other books.

In this video I learned that Pearl S. Buck was the reason China connected with the rest of the world. And after she wrote that she won the noble prize for littature in 1938 and the book became a very liked book by a lot of people around the world. Another new fact I learned from this video was that when communism took over the book was banned from China but after was sold again in the video they do not explain why though. I also learned from the book that if your feet were to big the would rap them tight and they thought that would like make them smaller or something.

All right so I knew her parents were missionaries, so I should have assumed that she went to China as a little girl. But I did not know that she grew up in China, or that she spent 40 years there. I thought that was really interesting, but other than that I already knew most of the stuff from the video, like how the Chinese weren't Christian, and the west didn't know much understand their culture very well.
