One important theme in this novel is that suffering is a part of life, so we need to find healthy ways to deal with suffering and still find happiness despite it. Rukmani, Nathan, and Kenny all endure suffering in different ways. Which character’s attitude about suffering do you identify with the most? Why?

I personally feel the most attuned to with Kenny. I was taken from everything I had ever known from my life (twice) and so I knew how it felt to be in a new environment with strange people, because that is how I always felt. I always kind of feel like an outsider in my class, and that is because I feel like they feel more connected with each other than with me. That seems like how Kenny felt: he is a white man in a country full of Indians. He is a part of their lives, in a sense, but he is not part of their culture, and in almost everyone's mind, he is an outsider, just like me.

Like Elijah said i feel like kenny. I was always treated like an outsider because of where i was from. Most people Im around are from America and they have things in common. Im not and I don’t share many interests as a lot of people and that’s what seperates me from them.

I would probably say I understand most Rukmani. She wanted the change and suffering in her life to stop and did not want to have to deal with it anymore. I do feel she was maybe a little dramatic about it, but I understand the desire for when things start going down hill wanting to back to the way things were before. Rukmani does not like having to adapt to what happens to her and I would say I do not like that either, I like having control over my life and being able to know where I am going with it.

I agree with what Nathaniel said she did want all the suffering and pain to go away and I feel like everybody can relate to this because no one wants to suffer in life I relate to this because in the past year I lost someone important to me and its still hard to forget about all the pain I had when he died I was very sad. But it was hard because when someone dies you look back and you think of all the times you wish you spent with them and a lot of regret comes with doing that.

I think I agree with Nathan's view on suffering. He is usually pretty resigned to suffering but works hard to try and find a solution, even if there isn't one at the moment. I try and be like that, when there is probably no way out of it physically, then try and work through it emotionally. I like how he takes suffering and processes it calmly and comes up with some way to fix it.

I would say that I relate to Rukmani she handles suffering very well she is like grass when wind(struggles) comes and blows the grass(Rukmani) bends along with the wind. And the grass always comes back up to the light of day. Rukmani relates to me on how flexible she is in different struggles. I have not had much experience with suffering in my own life but have seen it in many others lives and they almost always bend like the grass and come back up again. Comments are closed.
