Next class (November 5) the Theatre Arts class will hold auditions for its next play: A Christmas Carol. Students were given the script to take home today - they should read through it and come prepared to read a scene or two for auditions next class. Mrs. Brembeck and I will cast the show and we will begin rehearsing right away!
WHY CHARLES DICKENS? Mr. Charles Dickens was a beloved 19th Century British author who penned classics such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and, of course, A Christmas Carol. According to Les Standiford, author of The Man Who Invented Christmas, Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol at a time when he was really struggling financially and desperate to revive his career: “Faced with bankruptcy, he was contemplating giving up on writing fiction altogether. Instead, he pulled himself together and, in six short weeks, wrote a book that not only restored him in the eyes of the public but began the transformation of what was then a second-tier holiday into the most significant celebration of the Christian calendar,” (p. 6). For the past 8 weeks, the Humanities Vault Theatre Arts class has been working on three one act plays, based on Greek myths: Athena and Arachne (the myth of how the spider came to be!), King Midas and the Golden Touch (a lesson in being careful what you wish for!), and Pandora's Box (the myth about a beautiful, funny, talented, but rather foolish girl and her foolish husband!).
WHY GREEK MYTHS? Greek mythology is present throughout much of classical literature – it’s important for students to have this knowledge in their literature foundation in order to understand the allusions present throughout the classics they will read in high school, such as Cry, the Beloved Country, Things Fall Apart, and Frankenstein, as well as various poems and Shakespeare plays. The goal with this unit was to introduce students to the basic elements of acting, such as script-reading, ensemble work, stage directions, physicality, and vocal production. PERFORMANCES
Next week we will do a dress rehearsal, so please come prepared to rehearse with props and costumes in full! As much as possible, students should have their lines memorized. Students took home their scripts for both plays on Thursday, but just in case you can access them here:
Athena and Arachne King Midas and the Golden Touch Pandora's Box The Dominion Academy Theatre Arts class will have their first performance of the semester on Thursday, October 22 at 1:30 pm in the sanctuary at DA. Hope to see you there!
