Important information about Mrs. Teachey's drama class...
CLASS WEBSITE: I use this website to post updates about what we are doing in class and about upcoming performances. Your student can also find the script linked there, should it get lost. Please take a moment to read the class syllabus. CURRICULUM: I prefer to get to know my students before I choose the scripts we will work on. In general, we will do farcical performances of classic stories. We have done many Shakespearean comedies and tragedies (the tragedies are far more fun to get silly with!), Dickens, Austen, Stevenson, and even some Greek myths.Whatever we do, it will be lighthearted, fun, and silly. COSTUMES & PROPS: I do my best to keep the cost of our performances at $0. This means you will not be asked to purchase anything -- we will gather what we have and work with that. However, you are welcome to buy costume pieces or props if you like! PERFORMANCES: We will do an afternoon performance sometime at the end of fall semester (hoping for December but we'll see) and another at the end of spring semester. I will keep you posted on exact dates. WHY DRAMA? The purpose of the drama class is to introduce young students to the world of theatre, though its benefits reach far beyond acting. Through the course of the year, the drama class will help you develop important life skills such as public speaking and team work. In my 13 years of teaching theatre, I have observed that struggling readers often thrive in the performing arts because rather than slogging through the words on the page, the stories come to life. Suddenly they're not just reading at a desk, but they are reading to understand emotions, subtext, and actions. They are DOING. It is my goal to help each student develop confidence in his/her ability to read and to speak in a public setting this year. I am very much looking forward to (hopefully) a more normal year, complete with performances!!!!!!!

This year instead of doing our usual daytime performance we are going to do an EVENING performance on Friday, December 20 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at Dominion Academy. Call time for actors will be 5:45 and the doors to the sanctuary will open at 6:45. This evening will include three performances: the 1st & 2nd grade performing Swan Lake, the 3rd & 4th grade performing Taming of the Shrew, and the 5th-7th grade performing their own open scenes.
For this final performance, students have been asked to memorize their lines. The scripts are very short and simple so this shouldn't be a difficult task compared to Taming of the Shrew or Julius Caesar! In case students lose their scripts between school and home, here is an electronic copy. There are 3 scripts in this document so your child will have to locate the one his/her pair chose: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B069oRMc-Oi0OE05bVdJdXg5eUk/view?usp=sharing
Many of the students are already memorized, but tomorrow is the deadline since it is our final dress rehearsal (no school Monday, and we perform a week from tomorrow on the 27th!). The Humanities Vault students will give one final performance on Wednesday, May 27 at 1:15 p.m. They will be performing the partner scenes they've been working on in theatre arts as well as the composition pieces they're working on in music class. The performance will be in the sanctuary at Dominion and will last approximately one hour. Hope to see you there!
Our final unit this semester will focus on Chekhovian (also called open-ended) scenes. Each student will choose a partner and a script (there are several to choose from). Though the script is written, each pair will decide the context (who, what, where, when, why) of the scene. With permission, you may add or change aspects of the script as well. We will perform these at the end of the semester!
