For the past 8 weeks, the Humanities Vault Theatre Arts class has been working on three one act plays, based on Greek myths: Athena and Arachne (the myth of how the spider came to be!), King Midas and the Golden Touch (a lesson in being careful what you wish for!), and Pandora's Box (the myth about a beautiful, funny, talented, but rather foolish girl and her foolish husband!).
WHY GREEK MYTHS? Greek mythology is present throughout much of classical literature – it’s important for students to have this knowledge in their literature foundation in order to understand the allusions present throughout the classics they will read in high school, such as Cry, the Beloved Country, Things Fall Apart, and Frankenstein, as well as various poems and Shakespeare plays. The goal with this unit was to introduce students to the basic elements of acting, such as script-reading, ensemble work, stage directions, physicality, and vocal production. PERFORMANCES
Next week we will do a dress rehearsal, so please come prepared to rehearse with props and costumes in full! As much as possible, students should have their lines memorized. Students took home their scripts for both plays on Thursday, but just in case you can access them here:

Dear Parents & Guardians of Mrs. Teachey's Humanities Vault Theatre Arts Class:
I wanted to introduce myself to you all and give you some information about the class. My name is Jacqueline Teachey. I'm excited to be teaching Theatre Arts for the prep school again this year! Last year was a lot of fun as students explored various classical plays and even wrote some of their own. This year we'll continue this exploration, beginning with Greek myths. Some brief information about the drama class your child is taking this year:
I'm looking forward to a wonderful year with these kids! Sincerely, Jacqueline Teachey |
