Important information about Mrs. Teachey's drama class...
CLASS WEBSITE: I use this website to post updates about what we are doing in class and about upcoming performances. Your student can also find the script linked there, should it get lost. Please take a moment to read the class syllabus. CURRICULUM: I prefer to get to know my students before I choose the scripts we will work on. In general, we will do farcical performances of classic stories. We have done many Shakespearean comedies and tragedies (the tragedies are far more fun to get silly with!), Dickens, Austen, Stevenson, and even some Greek myths.Whatever we do, it will be lighthearted, fun, and silly. COSTUMES & PROPS: I do my best to keep the cost of our performances at $0. This means you will not be asked to purchase anything -- we will gather what we have and work with that. However, you are welcome to buy costume pieces or props if you like! PERFORMANCES: We will do an afternoon performance sometime at the end of fall semester (hoping for December but we'll see) and another at the end of spring semester. I will keep you posted on exact dates. WHY DRAMA? The purpose of the drama class is to introduce young students to the world of theatre, though its benefits reach far beyond acting. Through the course of the year, the drama class will help you develop important life skills such as public speaking and team work. In my 13 years of teaching theatre, I have observed that struggling readers often thrive in the performing arts because rather than slogging through the words on the page, the stories come to life. Suddenly they're not just reading at a desk, but they are reading to understand emotions, subtext, and actions. They are DOING. It is my goal to help each student develop confidence in his/her ability to read and to speak in a public setting this year. I am very much looking forward to (hopefully) a more normal year, complete with performances!!!!!!!

Congratulations, cast members! I have decided to create TWO casts for this production (with three people appearing in both casts). We only have five weeks of rehearsal so I am posting the cast list today and I will hand out the script on Monday so you can begin working on memorizing your lines. Here are your roles for our performance of the farcical version of The Three Musketeers (modified by Brendan P. Kelso). We will perform these plays via live video feed on Thursday, May 20 at 1:15 p.m.:

Congratulations, cast members! Here are your roles for our performance of the farcical version of The Jungle Book (adapted by Khara C. Barnhart and Brendan P. Kelso). We will perform this via live video feed on Thursday, March 25 at 1:15 p.m.:
Crew Members:
This unit we will read Rudyard Kipling's collection known as The Jungle Book, and then we will do a farcical version of his novel. Unfortunately we will not be able to do a traditional live performance, but we will film our final performance and send the link to parents.
To begin the year, the in-person drama class will learn how to tell a story by using your body. Students were divided into 3 groups and a director was appointed for each group. Each group will write and perform a musical mime -- a story without words. We will perform these for each other in class on October 8. Looking forward to seeing your creativity!
A few housekeeping items:
Welcome to Mrs. Teachey's Introduction to the Dramatic Arts! This is going to be a very different year learning about theatre in the time of COVID, but I am excited to explore the fine arts with you. Please complete the following tasks before our next class:
Your final assignment for the semester is to:
Your project is due May 26, so you have over a month to work on it. Can't wait to see your creativity on screen! Your first assignment is to watch one of the musicals on the list and then choose one of the projects to complete! Here are the details of the assignment - read it carefully!
Your project is due April 23, so you have almost exactly one month to work on it. Awesome, Wonderful, Talented Drama Students Whom I Miss So Much Already:
It breaks my heart to tell you that, short of a miracle, we will not be able to perform our farcical version of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet this spring. This makes me so sad for you and for me. I would like to thank you for all the work you did 3rd quarter - you guys are great! I just don't see any way we will be able to make it happen, even if we do return to school in May. It is possible that we will do this play in the fall, but classes will likely be organized differently so I don't know exactly how that will work out. I am very sorry to disappoint you this way. However, do not despair! An actor must perfect his/her craft, even if it means performing for a virtual audience! Therefore, drama class will continue via Google Classroom. I have a couple projects I am working on for you guys to do in the comfort of your own living rooms (and maybe with family, should you so choose...). I will post these projects here as well as in Google Classroom. Siblings may work together if you wish. Both projects will involve making videos. To turn in your projects, film and then upload your video to a cloud (Dropbox, Onebox, iCloud, Google Photos, etc.), then send me the link, or upload it to Google Classroom (I have not used this site much so I am still learning - please be patient with me!). Whatever works best for you in getting your work to me is fine. Your videos will not be posted publicly, but in a private folder for your fellow classmates to view. **A NOTE TO PARENTS: The first project involves choosing a movie to view off of a list that I created. There is a note for you at the bottom of the assignment that I will reiterate here: The list of movies contains musicals that I have deemed appropriate for my students to watch. However, you know your child best, and therefore I ask you to research or screen the movie first if it’s one you are not familiar with. A helpful website is Focus on the Family’s Plugged-In or Common Sense Media. STUDENTS: Stay tuned! And as always, if you have any questions please contact me. Sincerely, Mrs. Teachey |
