In chapter one of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mrs. Logan (Mama) says that although children do have to learn “how things are,” as Miss Crocker said, “that doesn’t mean they have to accept them . . . and maybe we don’t either.” What does Mama mean by this? When in your life have you been called on to NOT accept the “way things are” (if you can’t think of a personal anecdote, think of an example you know from history)?

To be honest I do not know much about this because my parents want me to keep things the way they are.But from history there had to be movements to change, for example the industrial revolution to change technology from simple tools to factories. This because many people did not like how things were, because everything was really slow. But because of a few inventors the industrial revolution happend and many inventions became of it.

Of course, we cannot accept that war and terrible things are okay, but they happen so much people have gotten used to hearing about it. For me there are many things I can't except, as I just stated I can't stand hearing about the terrible things that happen.

I have not had any experiences when I cant except the way things are. Though during the civil war people form the same country fought each other over how slavery should work. Since they could not agree the United States lost 620 thousand people.

In life I have had to accept the way things are. Like going to school, and more. But we cannot accept things that are wrong, such as countries fighting with each other, and so on. But still we have had to learn how to handle these things, even if we can’t do anything about it. As people of the United States of America, we have to change the way things are, even if that means we have to give away things we don’t want to give away.

I think what Mrs. Logan says is true. She means that children should not be blind to what is going on around them, but that they don't need to have a decided or strong opinion about these matters, and also be encouraged that they don't have to accept the wrongs of our society as right. Since we live in a time period where many important events in history have taken place, children need to be aware of the problems of the world. My parents encourage me to think about these things, but that I don't need to have such a strong opinion that it interferes with my life. Children, especially today, should be told of the events that happen in their time, and not be forced to accept the world's problems or have a decided opinion on them. Comments are closed.
