In Shirley Jackson's horror fiction story "The Lottery," a seemingly normal town has a disturbing tradition to which everyone conforms. Jackson uses her story to point out the danger of conformity and tradition. On the other hand, tradition is a good thing that unites groups of people as families, cultures, religions, countries, etc. Though Jackson's story is satire, it asks an important question: At what point is it important to speak out against the majority? It is scary to stand up and say "No" when everyone else is conforming. Have you ever had to do so? Think of someone in your life or someone from history who chose not to conform to "group think" and instead stood up for what is right.

Yes it can be scary since the people will all look at you when you say something that could be wrong. One person that said no to something was me I have sometimes said no to something I probably shouldn't have.

One time someone was bullying me and my sister stood up for me and said stop. When someone is doing wrong you should always say no

I cant remember if i did stand up to anything but there is a time in the bible where Jesus stood up to the people trading in the temple and told everyone that it was wrong to do so.

Mainly because of conformity. People are afraid to speak out their own opinions and be judged by it. They are afraid to be left out to be an outcast. For example, I have Social Anxiety and I’m afraid to confront random and be judged a lot.

It is always important to stand up for something you believe in even if everyone else thinks differently. A good example of a person who stood up against majority was Martin Luther when he nailed a list of 99 theses (complaints) about the Catholic Church to the church door. In England at the time, most people were Catholic and had Catholic beliefs, but Martin Luther wasn't afraid to stand up and point out the flaws of Catholicism. In doing this, Martin Luther started a major religious movement called the Reformation, which led to the founding of Protestantism. If Luther hadn't stood up for what he believed, our lives today would be very different.

it is good to stand up to the majority when somebody is being bullied. Why it is good because that person or persons will feel bad. It is scary to stand to people because they might judge you that feels very bad.

Yes, it is scary to do things like that, when other people think something opposite of your thinking, but still you should speak your opinion. Comments are closed.
