This book falls in the fantasy genre, but it deals with many real-life conflicts. None of us will ever face a dragon (we hope!) but we all will face a series of battles in our lives. How we fight those battles will determine the kind of men/women we are. Reread this quote from chapter 12 and think about the metaphor the author uses: “...it was now undoubtedly hot in the tunnel. Wisps of vapour floated up and past him and he began to sweat. A sound, too, began to throb in his ears, a sort of bubbling like the noise of a large pot galloping on the fire, mixed with a rumble as of a gigantic tom-cat purring. This grew to the unmistakable gurgling noise of some vast animal snoring in its sleep down there in the red glow in front of him. It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait,” (ch. 12, p. 214-215).
What do we learn from this passage about facing the “dragons” in our own lives?

Something I learned form that part is that you have to just go for it and do the hard thing. You have to face the dragon and not change your mind, because then you might not get the treasure. You have to fight the fear first and walk out of the tunnel, even before you face the dragon. So, you have to be brave and go face the hard challenges in life to get a chance at the treasure.

It is almost always scarier to think about doing something than actually doing it. Like singing on a stage in front of people. I've heard that while it is very scary before once you start singing, you're not as afraid. You need to be brave and face whatever it is you're fighting.

I've learned that thinking about something before doing it can be scary. like overthinking. for example, when I ride my horse and my instructor puts the jump up to a height I haven't jumped before I get scared. once I do it I figure out it is fun and then I want to do it again.

We can learn about how to live with our dragons in our lives. We can also learn about how we can defeat our dragons.

Sometimes it's harder to face our problems than to actually overcome them. Maybe it's being nervous to get on a plane, or not wanting to do an assignment. It can be difficult, but once you get it rolling it's easier.
