“Fairy tales aren't true. Fairy tales are MORE than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be defeated." – author Neil Gaiman
At the beginning of this unit we discussed WHY people enjoy reading fantasy. Now that you’ve finished the novel, what do you think? What makes fantasy so entertaining for people? What real life ideas come up in this story -- about life, about good and evil, about friendship, about leadership, about humanity, about courage -- even though it’s not “true”?

What makes fantasy entertaining to other people is that it gives them a break from the real world.

I think one of the things that makes fantasy so enjoyable to read is the danger and not knowing if they'll survive the adventure. I like the symbolism of good triumphing over evil. The Hobbit shows how you can beat your dragons to get your treasure and have an adventure along the way.

what I think makes fantasy so enjoyable is the thrill, meeting new creatures like dragons, unicorns, griffins, etc. mainly the thrill through. because it kind of just glues you to your seat wanting to know what happens next. will he save the princess? or will the dragon eat him? will they complete their journey? or will they get lost or stuck? you never really know. also with the fact that we grew up on fairytales and fantasy stories. it gives a reminder of our childhood too. it also lets us escape from our world into our own little world we made up in our heads. its a very common genre but loved by many. fro ages 1-100.

I think something that makes fantasy so enjoyable is that it gives us a break from the real world with a world containing magic and dragons and stuff. It's also nice because writers can take ordinary things and make them magical. Fantasy stories often have real life problems presented in an interesting way to show people how to solve it.

I think people read fantasy because it is neat to read about things you can't find in our world, like magic, dragons, and other things like that. In the Hobbit there is a lot of character development with Bilbo. He is practically forced into the quest, but becomes brave and looks out for his friends with time. This shows, even though your problems may not be a quest and a dragon, you can still change and grow to face those problems.
