“Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger’s arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins,” (chapter 4, p. 61). In his allegory, Golding argues that society (the law, authority, etc.) is what keeps us from behaving badly. Is this true?

i'm not sure if he is right, I think society and rules hold us together but i don't think we'd combust without them. i think new rules would always be made before any one gets killed.

I think he is kind of right. Some people only behave nicely and don’t go around doing bad things is because they don’t want to be caught and punished. However, some people don’t act horribly because they know what the right thing to do is. On the other hand, though, some people don’t care and just do whatever they want to do.

This is true sometimes. Some people are able to control themselves while other do need our laws to prevent them from doing bad things.

This is only true in some cases. In Rogers case, it is true, because he is a literal sociopath, but in most situations, even without society, morals still exist.

yes, it's true. some people need guidelines aka laws to prevent doing bad things while others just know what to do and what not to do

This is true sometimes. Some people would lose control without rules. They might feel like they can do whatever they want since they have nobody to stop them. Rules are very much needed or people would get hurt and other bad things could happen. Comments are closed.
