“Nevertheless, through this experience Wang Lung learned what the young men had not taught him, that he belonged to his own kind, who have black hair and black eyes.” (chapter 12)
The author knew what it was like to grow up as an outsider, having been a missionary kid in China. How old were you the first time you experienced belonging to your “own kind”? Describe when you first discovered another culture/religion/ethnicity.

when I was a year old, my mom took me to Peru to be with her side of the family. I don't remember any of it, but she took me two years later, around the time I started to get my first memories. I fit right in, it felt like in Peru, prejudice wasn't even a thing. They didn't care if I was a little different. In America, prejudice is a huge issue. I never fit in as much. America is so much more demanding to fit into society and I hate it.

I don't remember ever feeling that feeling, even if I did, I don't know when. I don't remember when I first discovered another culture/religion/ethnicity it all seemed like I learned little by little about every culture. I wasn't like I all the sudden was taught about china and I never knew what it was before it was very accumulative.

I was with my 2nd foster family and someone asked what my family was like, and at the time the only family I knew was my mom. So I told them about her and they told me about there family and listed off all of there brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren, and great grandparents. After that conversation I realized that aside from my mom I was completely alone because I had no family and no friends just a set of care takers. But eventually things worked out.

I don't experience things like this often but I have been blessed to have most of my life been surrounded by Christian friends and family, but you won't always encounter that. There is this thing I go to with my dad every year and its a campout thing and its not specifically a Christian group so I have met people there who did not have the same believes that I did. This made me feel more apart of the faith then just another one who follows it because not everyone does follow the faith.

I feel like the first time I belonged to my own kind was probably in like 5th grade when I pretty much saw everybody hanging out with their own like friend group and I figured that I need one to hang out with so I went and made friends. And now one of them is one of my bestfriends today Nathaniel Haan.

I never felt that feeling before. My first year playing club soccer our team had players from many different religions and ethnicities. Many were from Africa some were Christian and some were Muslim. Comments are closed.
