Go back through the collection of Maya Angelou poems we read and choose one to react to. What images in this poem stick out to you (What do you see/hear/smell/touch/taste?)? What do you think the poet is trying to say? What idea or a lesson should we learn from this poem?

In the 'Africa' poem when she describes Africa as a person it's interesting to try to picture it.

In the Africa poem she says something about pain and screams. When she talks about the screams it makes you visualize whats going on. In that line you can see and hear whats happening.

I love the poem "Still I Rise". It's like she is being beat down over and over again, yet she always stands back up. She says "Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? " As if saying, they wanted to see her given up, but then she follows those lines with "But still, like air, I’ll rise.". I think she is trying to say that no matter how hard life gets, it's important to keep going, and not give up. And all the while, she is happy, acting like she has everything.

I liked her poem "Touched by an Angel," it feels warm and bright. I liked the part that says: "Yet if we are bold, love strikes away the chains of fear from our souls." I think its saying, you have to go find love, you can't expect to have it if your just alone in a corner. When i read this poem i imagine heavenly lights and beings suddenly appearing to make you feel loved. if I could smell this it would smell like a warm soup, or cookies.

I like the poem “Africa” how she said things like she IS Africa and if they were a person and how they felt, it really stood out to me Comments are closed.
