Important information about Mrs. Teachey's drama class...
CLASS WEBSITE: I use this website to post updates about what we are doing in class and about upcoming performances. Your student can also find the script linked there, should it get lost. Please take a moment to read the class syllabus. CURRICULUM: I prefer to get to know my students before I choose the scripts we will work on. In general, we will do farcical performances of classic stories. We have done many Shakespearean comedies and tragedies (the tragedies are far more fun to get silly with!), Dickens, Austen, Stevenson, and even some Greek myths.Whatever we do, it will be lighthearted, fun, and silly. COSTUMES & PROPS: I do my best to keep the cost of our performances at $0. This means you will not be asked to purchase anything -- we will gather what we have and work with that. However, you are welcome to buy costume pieces or props if you like! PERFORMANCES: We will do an afternoon performance sometime at the end of fall semester (hoping for December but we'll see) and another at the end of spring semester. I will keep you posted on exact dates. WHY DRAMA? The purpose of the drama class is to introduce young students to the world of theatre, though its benefits reach far beyond acting. Through the course of the year, the drama class will help you develop important life skills such as public speaking and team work. In my 13 years of teaching theatre, I have observed that struggling readers often thrive in the performing arts because rather than slogging through the words on the page, the stories come to life. Suddenly they're not just reading at a desk, but they are reading to understand emotions, subtext, and actions. They are DOING. It is my goal to help each student develop confidence in his/her ability to read and to speak in a public setting this year. I am very much looking forward to (hopefully) a more normal year, complete with performances!!!!!!!
